When applying to residencies, many students ask how much is it going to cost them
since they are living on a fixed income with medical school loans.

According to a recent study in Academic Medicine, the Journal of the Association of
American Medical Colleges, medical students applied to an average of 36.4 residencies
across all specialties and interviewed at 12 programs.

The cost to apply is:

  • Up to 10 program is $97
  • 1-20 is $11 each
  • 21-30 is $16 each
  • More than 31 is $26 each

If you do ACGME and AOA programs, it’s going to be a separate fee for each one.
It’s best to apply to at least 10.

You can apply to more based on other factors. If you are interested in going to a particular large city, like Philadelphia, you might decide you are going to apply to all that’s available in the city.

If you want to go to a combined residency, you might want to apply to all that you can think of in that instance.

So as a general rule, apply to at least 10 or more
depending on what else is going on and other priorities.  If you get a lot of interviews, you can narrow it down from there.
