What Happened at ACOFP that Made Me Choose Family Medicine

When I was in osteopathic medical school, I wasn’t sure what specialty I wanted to pursue. I was attracted to a number of specialties with family medicine being only one. I joined the ACOFP to investigate family medicine as a possible path forward for me among the many I was considering at the time. I thought that it’d just be a way to get involve with family medicine and receive some information that would help me decide. But I found out that it provided me with so much more, and I ended up going into family medicine as a result.

Here’s a list of what the ACOFP did for me:
  • By joining the ACOFP, I had access to many different family physicians who were willing to openly discuss their views on medicine. By talking with these physicians, I learned that family practice offers a large scope of practice options for me to pursue.

  • I also learned about the many ways family physicians choose to practice family medicine, and I spoke with these physicians about why and how they are doing what they do.

  • Through the ACOFP, I met many osteopathic family physicians who had a great enthusiasm for medicine. I saw true optimism for the future of medicine and the future of our specialty. I didn’t find this type of positive attitude from some specialists, many of whom had a negative attitude for family medicine and had lost their love for being a physician in general.

  • I experienced being part of an organization that truly cares about the opinions of their students, residents and young physicians. Those voices are not only heard but encouraged and appreciated. Student and resident positions are available on the Board of Governors and on more than 30 committees.

  • And it’s really fun! I had lots of opportunities for networking with students and physicians, socializing at ACOFP events and dancing!
