While it’s important to focus on getting good grades, it’s also important to pace yourself and to realize that your success after medical school will not just hinge on grades. Building relationships and acquiring important information that you can’t get from you fellow students will also be important to your career. By getting involved in social outlets that provide you with educational opportunities like participating in the ACOFP as a student will help you moving forward. Not only is it free for students to join, but it can also break up your school years with friendships and social connections that will help you become a better students in the long run.

Here are some reasons why you should participate.

Student Lectures
Every year at the ACOFP Annual Convention, the ACOFP offers programming specifically suited to students. Past lecture topics include Family Medicine in a Managed Care Model, A Full Spectrum of Business and Medicine Preparing for Your Family Medicine Residency Application, Social Media and Technology and Oh the Places You’ll Family Medicine.

Meet People
By going to ACOFP Annual Conventions and participating in ACOFP committees and SAACOFP committees, you will increase your social circle. This is important not just because socializing protects against depression and anxiety, but it also provides you with information you might not receive anywhere else about your profession.

Get the Real Scoop on Residencies
Soon you’ll be looking for family medicine residencies to apply. But not all residencies are created equally. A residency may be perfectly fine for others but isn’t a good fit for you. Since you’ll be spending so much time in your residency, it’s important to find the right one that suits you. ACOFP offers annual residency fairs at the ACOFP Annual Convention where you can talk directly to program directors.

Find Mentors
By participating in the ACOFP, you’ll meet osteopathic family physicians who may become mentors. Some ACOFP members have been osteopathic family physicians for decades while others are just starting out. You may find you can learn a lot from others who are currently working in family medicine.

Take a Break from Studying
When you’re so focused on studying, you might not take time out for your social life. However, this can be a mistake. You risk burn out by doing the same activity too much. Your studying and retention may improve if you take time out to increase your social circle by meeting new students across the country. The ACOFP provides opportunities for students to be part of the Student Association of the ACOFP National Executive Board, SAACOFP committees and ACOFP committees.
